How do you make yoga safe for people with PTSD?
What yoga techniques can help people heal from trauma?
Yoga can be a powerful tool for helping people who have experienced trauma or have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This evidence-based workshop draws on current scientific research and successful international programs to provide insights and practical skills that you can use straight away to help students manage their symptoms.
You will be learning from trauma aware yoga expert and Adore Yoga founder, Nikola Ellis. Nikola holds a Master's degree in Counselling and Applied Psychotherapy and has many years experience working with students who have experienced trauma. In this introductory workshop you will learn simple techniques to work safely and effectively with trauma and PTSD affected students, including:
- The causes and symptoms of trauma and PTSD
- The treatment of trauma and PTSD
- Trauma and the physical body
- The key principles and techniques of trauma-aware yoga
- Safe practice - triggers and re-traumatisation
We will also explore issues surrounding self-care for teachers working with students affected by trauma and join together as a sangha (community) to support both our students and eachother.
At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- Design trauma aware yoga classes
- Confidently teach trauma-aware yoga postures and techniques
- Manage your own health and well being as a teacher of trauma aware yoga
This workshop is designed for yoga teachers who would like an introduction to the techniques of trauma aware yoga to work with people affected by trauma or PTSD.
Continuing Professional Development:
This workshop attracts 7 CPD points for certified yoga teachers.
About the Teacher
Nikola Ellis MCAP, C-IAYT
Founder of Adore Yoga, Nikola has been immersed in yoga for over 25 years, studying with leading international teachers including TKV Desikachar, Judith Lasater, Donna Farhi, Ganesh Mohan, and Saraswathi Vasudevan. Nikola has been training yoga teachers and therapists for 14 years and runs a successful private Yoga Therapy practice in Sydney. She develops, delivers and consults on Yoga Therapy programs for organisations including A Sound Life, Cancer Council NSW, The Butterfly Foundation and RSL Defence Care. Nikola holds a Master's degree in Counselling and Applied Psychotherapy and is a certified Yoga Therapist. She is currently studying for a Master's degree in Public Health at the University of Sydney.
